Intel Mac stuck on macOS 26? These free tools still work

macOS 27 needs an M1 or newer, so every Intel Mac stops at macOS 26. What that means for you, and free menu bar tools that still run natively on Intel.

Why your Mac cannot install macOS 27

macOS 27 Golden Gate runs only on Macs with Apple silicon: an M1 chip or newer. Every Intel Mac, including the last MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro models Apple sold with Intel inside, stops at macOS 26. There is no setting or patch that changes that; Software Update simply will not offer it.

Not sure which one you have? Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. If the summary shows a Chip line (Apple M1, M2, M3 and so on), you can upgrade. If it shows a Processor line with Intel in it, you are on macOS 26 from here on.

What staying on macOS 26 actually means

Less than it sounds like, at least for now. Your Mac keeps working exactly as it does today, and the apps you already have do not stop launching because a newer macOS exists. What changes is the slope from here:

  • Security updates for older macOS versions usually keep coming for a while after a new release, on Apple’s schedule rather than a published one. Keep installing them from Software Update.
  • New apps will gradually start asking for macOS 27 or Apple silicon, and some updates of apps you use may do the same. That is the real cost, and it arrives slowly.
  • Apps that branch on the OS version are the quiet risk. When a developer fixes something for the new macOS and leaves an old code path behind for yours, that old path tends to rot without anyone noticing, because nobody on the team is running it any more.

Free tools that still run natively on Intel

Webstarted Toolbox is one free menu bar app with a catalog of small tools. It supports macOS 12 and later and ships a universal build, so on an Intel Mac it runs natively, not through translation. It also had to deal with macOS 27 (which broke the left click on menu bar icons, here is the story), and the fix was made without a single version-gated branch: the same build serves macOS 12 through 27, so the Intel path is not the one left to rot.

Some of the widgets worth having on a Mac that is going to stay put for a while:

The full set is on the Toolbox page, and our list of free menu bar apps picks the ones we would install first.

One exception: our other app, Screen Capture, needs Apple silicon on the Mac. That limit is its own and has nothing to do with macOS 27, but it does mean it will not install on an Intel Mac.
