A Webstarted Toolbox widget · macOS & Windows

A random name picker in your menu bar.

Paste your list — one name per line — and pick one (or several) at random. Who goes first in standup, who wins the raffle, where you're having lunch. Plus a dice roller (d4 to d100) and a coin flip for the quick calls. Offline, free, and faster than opening a spinner website.

How it works

One name per line. One click. Done.

Type or paste your list into the widget — one item per line, blanks are ignored — and hit Pick. It draws one name with your system's cryptographic random generator, so every entry has exactly the same chance. Need more than one? Set how many to pick and it draws that many distinct names, no repeats. Pick them all and you get the whole list back in a shuffled order.

  • Paste a list, one name per line — it counts the items for you
  • Pick 1, pick N without repeats, or shuffle the whole list
  • Your list and settings are saved locally between uses
  • Last 5 results of the session stay on screen
Use cases

Standups, raffles, teams — and lunch.

Anything that needs a fair, instant draw. Keep your team's names in the list and it's one click every morning; the list stays saved, so there's nothing to re-paste.

  • Standups — who goes first today? Pick all N for the full speaking order.
  • Raffles & giveaways — paste the entrants, pick the winner in front of everyone.
  • Splitting teams — shuffle the list and split it down the middle.
  • Quick decisions — flip a coin, or roll a d20 and let fate decide lunch.
Coming from a wheel-spinner website?

Same fairness. No browser tab, no ads.

Spinner sites are fine — until you're opening a tab, closing a cookie banner and re-pasting your list every single morning. Random Picker lives in your menu bar: your list is already there, the draw is one click, and it works with no internet at all. No spinning-wheel animation, though — if the suspense is the point, the wheel wins. If the decision is the point, this is faster.

  • List saved locally — nothing to re-paste, nothing uploaded
  • Works offline, with cryptographic randomness
  • Dice and coin flip included in the same widget

Installed from the catalog, in one click.

Random Picker isn't bundled into the app — it's a widget in the Webstarted Toolbox catalog. Open the catalog tab (🧰), press the “+” next to Random Picker, and it drops into your menu bar. No reinstall, no app update. Here are a few of its neighbors:

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Do I have to download anything separately?

No. Random Picker is a widget in the Webstarted Toolbox catalog. Open the catalog tab (🧰) inside the app, hit the “+” next to Random Picker, and it installs in one click — no separate download, and no app update needed.

Is it really random?

Yes — more so than most spinner websites. Every pick, dice roll and coin flip uses your system’s cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with rejection sampling, so each item and each die face has a mathematically uniform chance. It’s not the weaker Math.random(), and there’s no animation nudging the outcome.

Can I pick more than one name at a time?

Yes. When your list has more than one item, a “Pick” field appears: choose how many to draw and it picks that many distinct names — no repeats within a draw. Set it to the full list and you get everyone back in a shuffled order, which is exactly what you want for standup speaking order or splitting teams.

Which dice can I roll?

From 1 to 12 dice at a time, with d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100 sides. You see each individual die plus the total sum, and there’s a one-tap coin flip (heads or tails) for the simplest decisions.

Does it save my list? Does it work offline?

Your list, pick count and dice setup are saved locally on your machine, so they’re right where you left them next time. Results themselves are ephemeral — the widget keeps the last 5 of the session on screen. Everything runs 100% offline; nothing you type ever leaves your computer.
